Afghan Box Camera

Uma das experiências mais marcantes da viagem que fiz à India em 2006, foi a sessão fotográfica realizada com Mr Tikam Chand e o irmão Mr Surendar na cidade de Jaipur. Numa das ruas mais movimentadas desta cidade, rodeados por pessoas, transito, barulho e cheiros intensos, estivemos cerca de 1 hora num ritual de retrato “a la minute” que se tornou inesquecível!

One of the most striking experiences of the journey to India in 2006, was a photoshoot with Mr Tikam Chand and his brother Mr Surendar at Jaipur. At one of the busiest streets of this city, surrounded by people, traffic, noise and strong smells we engaged in an unforgettable one hour “a la minute” portrait ritual!

Passados vários anos desta experiência, descobri o projeto Afghan Box Camera, que procura preservar a continuidade de uma camera “a la minute” originária do Afeganistão (kamra-e-faoree), com características muito próprias e que estava condenada ao desaparecimento.

Several years after I discovered the Afghan Box Camera project, aimed at preserving the continuity of the “a la minute” camera originated from Afghanistan (kamra-e-faoree), very characteristic and doomed to extinction.

Depois de ter a oportunidade de testar uma camera “a la minute” produzida por um amigo (ver este post), surgiu a ideia de desenvolver uma réplica da kamra-e-faoree, aproveitando toda a informação disponível na internet, nomeadamente no website do projeto. Lancei o desafio ao Vitor, que em cerca de 1 mês construiu um exemplar único e funcional desta fantástica camera, passando a ser mais um contributo na preservação e promoção da fotografia clássica, e da kamra-e-faoree em particular.

After having the opportunity to test a “a la minute” camera developed by a friend (see this post), the idea came to produce a replica of the kamra-e-faoree, using all of the information available online, mostly from the project website. I challenged Vitor, and in one month he built an unique and functioning replica of this amazing camera, having contributed to the preservation and promotion of the classic photography, and the kamra-e-faoree in particular.
